#SayItWithSweat Top 5 Alternative Running Races for 2014

Posted by Cags R under Running on 11 January 2014 at 12:00 AM

Marathons and other distance races are all well-and-good, but how about trying out some alternative running races which will put a smile on your face as well as a spring in your step!

#1 Color Runs - color runs (such as The Color Run  and Color Me Rad) are cropping up in tons of locations across the globe and they're a whole lot of fun. These events definitely embrace the Tribesports mantra of "Screw the fresh start" - the start lines consist of clouds of powder paint being thrown by spectators, marshalls and the participants themselves!

#2 Undie Runs - dare to bare your underwear with undie runs! Usually taking place around 1 mile distances and typically are designed for pure fun - team serious need not apply. Famous undie runs include the annual undie run in Central Park the day before the NYC triathlon where participants can blow off some pre-race nerves before the big day. Look out for 500 scantily clad triathletes in the park on 1st August this year!

Runs like Cupid's Undie Run - an annual tradition for Valentines weekend to raise funds for The Children's Tumor trust - encourage you to use your pants to raise some mega-bucks for a great cause! They're recognised as the biggest undie run organisation in the world, with 27 US runs and 3 in Australia, this undie run is a great alternative race option for 2014.

"We encourage everyone to run together as a big group (umm, body warmth, duh). If you are competitive at heart, we suggest you put some of that competitiveness to see if you have what it takes to become a top fundraiser!"

Cupid's Undie Run are "putting the hilarity in charity" and all in an effort to raise $3million

Ladies, make sure you're looking great in your undies with a Tribesports Seamless Crop!

#3 Food races - these may seen like a slightly counter-productive race idea, but if you're a Man Vs. Food fan AND a runner, then why not combine your 2 passions, right?

For example, runners in North Carolina with a sweet tooth could look up the Krispy Kreme Challenge: "2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour.  The mantra of the Krispy Kreme Challenge epitomizes the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude."

If you're more a savoury foods person, test your stomach and your cardio with the New York Hot Dog Challenge; 3-5 miles with 9 - 11 hot dogs along the way!

Team based multi-sports is your thing? Then Man Vs. Food's Adam Richman would recommend The Doughman - your transition will be more than a change of clothes:

"4-person team in a relay format with each team member performing an individual eating + athletic leg culminating in a final team eating + sprint leg to the finish line. The race comprises 1 bike leg, 1 aquatic activity leg (requires some running), and 2 run legs."

#4 Electric Runs - don't fancy the powder paint? How about Neon UV face paints instead?! Bring along your glow-sticks, fancy dress and finish off the look with your running shoes - perfect! These are nighttime 5km walk/runs which transform your usual city run and through streets lit up for a party! ElectricRun have swept across the US and are now have 5 UK locations too.

And last, but in no means least, we could not compile a list of alternative running races without mentioning #5...

Wife Carrying Race - you can thank the muscle and brains of Finland for this final alternative running race! The 2 best rules about wife carrying have to be:

  1. The wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbor's, or you may have found her further afield; she must, however, be over 17 years of age

  2. The minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49 kilograms. If she is less than 49 kg, the wife will be burdened with a rucksack containing additional weight such that the total load to be carried is no less than 49 kg.

Keep your eyes peeled for Columbus Day contests near you and put the 4th & 5th of July this year in your calendar - you wouldn't want to miss the World Championships!!

Make sure you've got the right kit for your alternative race this year; pick up some Tribesports Performance Wear and look like a pro!
