Tribesports User of the Week: Alina G

Alina G is a consistent member of the Tribesports top 100 and manages to stay active with 4 kids in-tow, we couldn't think of anyone more appropriate for our User of the Week for Mothers Day!

So to start with, training and living up in Scotland makes you pretty hardcore; what’s your favourite thing about living in the 7 Stanes area?

Having some of the best trails in the UK within an hours drive of home is brilliant; as a relatively new biker I do feel spoilt, Kirroughtree is only 20 minutes away, so I can pop up there for a jaunt pretty easily, and with a bit of local knowledge from the Galloway Hillbillies, a fantastic ride can be morphed into an awesome epic, the waymarked trails are just the beginning, believe me!!

How well do you juggle all your different commitments; family, friends, training, what’s your tip for successful juggling? 

Well, it's a challenge to fit it all in, I home educate the boys, we run a business, and I am a Cub and Explorer Scout leader too, so I'm always doing something, but I have sacrificed a few things to make time for it all, like Ironing.....
It's good that we live somewhere I feel able to run at night, it's amazing to get the kids to bed, park hubby in front of the telly, and get my lights on. I spent a long time not being very active, having problems with my joints, being told by doctors to rest, not run, not walk much even, but in fact it only made it worse. Being busy and making my body strong through being outdoors has given me a new lease of life, so it's a no-brainer really. 

And can you do real juggling?

Oh no, I can only juggle one-handed, badly.

There’s a great picture of your daughter adding a little extra resistance to your press-ups, do you get your kids involved with a lot of your fitness?

Ha! Well, I've got 4 kids, so they keep me pretty fit just chasing them!! But yeah, I like to involve them as much as they are comfortable with. The boys aged 10 and 7-and-a-half have been biking for a good few years now, the eldest has even tackled the red route at Kirroughtree with me (in 2 halves) as he was bored of doing the blue. The girls are catching up now; they are 6 and 3, the eldest daughter could ride at an impressively early age, and can pull the best skids on her little spesh, she even kicks the back-end out to the side! The wee one loves watching me do yoga and has a bash at what i'm doing; she said the other morning that she wants to be a runner when she grows up, just like me, and practices her "exercises" all the time.

What’s been your hardest Challenge on Tribesports and which are you most proud of?

I think it has to be the 500 push ups in February Challenge. Having only done "ladies" push ups on a swiss ball, I'd had a go at proper ones and thought 'ok, I'll give it a whirl'. I'd broken it down into how many I had to do each day, and figured it would take me the whole month. But, a few crazy bursts, and a bit of encouragement from Neil C, I finished in fine style. Also, the run challenges I've done have been really amazing - I never thought of myself as a runner, but I'm pushing myself more and more, and I'm really enjoying it. The run for an hour without walking was awesome, I ended up running for 2 hours in the end - I didn't see the point in stopping if I didn't really need to - and I was curious to see just how far I could push myself. As for the hardest challenge, I still can't stand on 1 leg with my eyes closed, think it was one of the first challenges I signed up for, and I still can't do it, I'm not giving up though!!

What would be your perfect Mother’s Day present? 

A perfect Mother's Day present would be....  big family bike ride somewhere wild, maybe the Fort William trails, I'm itching to go explore up there....

Which Tribesports users make your day and inspire you? 

It has to be Nikos G for his mind chatterings, they always make me hungry to get out and lose myself for a while, and Neil C, for his no-nonsense awesomeness, There are many more that are legends also, Jim H for being a total machine, and Sarah H for getting me running in the first place...

What’s your favourite sports-movie quote? 

The only sports movie I own is Follow Me, But the best quote I've heard was from Star Wars, it was Yoda saying: "there is no try, only do, or do not"  -certainly focusses the mind before something potentially iffy...

Finally, what’s your next Challenge going to be?

I think my next challenge will be run for 2 hours off road, I've got an 18k trail Challenge on Saturday, at Cartmel in the Lakes, they have warned us it will be very soft underfoot, strong possibility of knee deep mud in places, bring it on!!
