Tribesports User of the Week: Brenda D

Posted by Brenda D under Running, Triathlon on 26 December 2013 at 12:00 AM

Brenda D profileFirst of all I'm thrilled to be the Christmas user of the week 2013 and I want to thank TS for nominating me. It has definitely made my Christmas.

Which Tribesports Challenge has been the toughest?

My 1st Aquathon was really tough. I wasn't used to swimming in open choppy waters. I felt an overwhelming desire to quit and retire to the comfort of the safety boat, but the thoughts of all those hours of training being wasted by quitting at the first hurdle spurred me on (along with my stubborn streak). I was virtually a non swimmer last year but I have managed to swim 100km so far this year.

The proudest achievement is the Marathon passport i.e. run an organised marathon in 5 different countries. This has always been a dream of mine and I finally made it come true. I've ran marathons in Dublin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York and Berlin.

As one of our leading reindeer, which has been your favorite route to run during the Elves Vs Reindeer race?

My favourite is a 13K run through a local woodland. The woodland borders an up market golf course and strictly speaking I shouldn't be there, but maybe that gives the run an added spice! There's nothing as inspiring as running through the rich oxygenated air surrounded by oak ash and beech, this is my ultimate Zen run where mind body and soul seem to come together and exist in total harmony for that hour or so. Perhaps it also brings out the Christmas reindeer in me too!

You've set yourself the Challenge of your first triathlon in 2014, which part are you most excited by?

Brenda D New York Marathon

All of it!!! I absolutely love the whole three activities.

Have you selected which event you'll enter?

My 1st one I hope to complete is the 3D Tri Sprint in May. The swimming section takes place in the National Aquatic Centre . I train there a lot so I hope the familiarity with the environs will make it easier. I also want to complete the Dublin City Sprint Triathlon in the Phoenix Park in August. And finally I hope to compete in Collinstown, Co Meath in September where there will be a lake swim (I'm shivering at the thoughts).

Other than your Tribesports friends, your dog has been a great training partner, What's the furthest you run with him?

The furthest has been 12km. She's 13 years old and as active as ever. If I run with her 'off lead she probably runs twice as much and comes home filthy dirty after her run.

You've been adding a lot of training sessions with kettlebells, which are your favourite exercise with them?

Yes I do some kettlebell exercises after completing my run and cycle. My favourite one is 'Clean and Jerk'. I'm hoping this will build up my arm muscles for swimming.

The travel to a Tribesports Friend Challenge is a great idea, how are you getting on with it?

I'm travelling to my Tribesports friend Tamara A. It's 4676km to her place. I've over 400km done already which means I'm off the west coast of Ireland and heading into deep water I'll be some months crossing the Atlantic Ocean at least this way I don't have to take sea sickness tablets!. Tamara informs me that it is snowing at the moment so I hope she'll have a nice warm drink lined up for me!!!!!

Which Tribesports user makes your day?

This is a tricky question. I have so many Tribesports friends. I love the competitive banter I have with Tamara A. Helen T is virtually cycling around Ireland and  gives me bits of information about Ireland that I never knew as she cycles to a destination. Eunice Y is always quietly encouraging me. Stephen C makes me smile with his funny observations I also want to mention Loretta A who only lives up the road from me yet we keep on missing each other at events. We will surely meet eventually I hope!!! Pronsias (Frank) M and Malachy K I could go on an on.?
