I think the challenge that I most proud of was the 8-minute wall squat. I had a hard time doing a few minutes while doing p90x, so I couldn't imagine doing it for 8 minutes. So I set out for my goal and I actually did it. I was so proud of myself that I was telling all of my friends, etc. Then the next day, my 9 year old did it and later that day my 11 year old did it. At least I had a little time to bask in my glory.
Did the gun show in your profile picture get settled with an arm wrestle? What's the story behind those race bibs?
The gun show is a thing that my clients and I do to show we conquered something. It is a way of bragging about our inner strength. The little guy in the picture is my step-son Tadd and we both just got done completing "The Mudman" so we wanted to show our guns because we kicked butt!
There are loads of great triathlon pictures on your profile - which discipline do you consider your strongest?
The discipline that I consider my strongest would be my cycling. I am new to the triathlon scene and probably would have never considered it if one of my clients did not convince me that I could do it. Now I am hooked, well kind of...it still scares me, which I think is a good thing because it makes you afraid to fail in your own mind.
What advice would you give to a first timer at triathlon?
The best advice I could ever give anyone who decides to do a triathlon is to leave your ego behind. You will see all kinds of athletes at these competitions...people who are doing the race on a mountain bike to people who have $6,000 bikes. The point is to do your best and finish..because when you are a done, you are a triathlete regardless of where you placed and that's more than a lot of people can say.
As a personal trainer, who are your favourite people to train?
My favorite people to train are the ones who have hit rock bottom and need to make a change. They are done feeling the way they feel and are motivated to become a healthier person. I have been so fortunate to have so many of these people walk into my life and now they are inspiring each other and that motivates me.
What ways do you measure the progress of a client?
I measure the progress of my clients based on their own person goals. I just received an email from one of my clients talking about her progress and I got her permission to share. I love this quote, because it is the essence of my training, to help people find their true self:
I bought a couple of "little black dresses" for when I go to New York. My goal has been to lose a few pounds so I look super hot in them. I just tried them on for my husband (for the first time) and got the reaction I was hoping for. Thank you so much for your help with getting in shape.
On another note, I really enjoy TS because it has allowed me to create a following on FB with the challenges. I have a group of people who request a challenge for the week and I create one for them to do for 7 days. TS makes me think outside the box and has really made me become a better trainer and better athlete, especially because of the accountability piece.
