John G profileWhich has been your toughest Tribesports Challenge and which are you most proud of?

I have to say, my toughest challenge has been Run your first marathon. I only started doing something about my extremely poor health and fitness in January of 2012. At that time, I was 43 years old, overweight and sadly out of shape. I bought a gym membership, for the sole purpose, to get active, lose some weight and be a little more healthy. After weeks of walking on the treadmill, I realized that I was able to run a little bit. Run/Walking turned into a challenge to do my first half marathon. 4 months later, I did it using a 3min run/1min walk interval. After that, I kept training and signed up for my next half race. A few more half marathons later, I completed my first full marathon this year in April.

Although I am very proud of completing my first full marathon, the thing I have the most pride in is inspiring my kids to be more active. In the last year, I have had a few races with both my oldest boys. They are now 16 and 18 years old. We have done a 5k Turkey Trot, Spartan Sprint, 5 Mile Trail Race and my oldest just completed his first half marathon with me, last weekend! I'm so proud of both of them! They were all very special times with my boys!

At what point did you get that 'I'm not just running, I'm an actual runner' moment?

Good question. Starting as a walk/runner, I didn't consider myself a real runner. I would have to say that, when I did my Harrisburg Half Marathon, in Sep 2012, with no run/walk strategy, that would be when I considered myself an actual runner. I finished in just over 2 hours.

With one marathon already completed this year, will you be signing up for another?

Haha! I loved my first marathon training so much, that I signed up for my second marathon, the day before I ran my first one! I'm training for that one now. It will be November 10th! I'm really excited about this one! I had an injury, while training for the first one, so I had to adapt my schedule and overcome lack of training. This time, I'm feeling very healthy and can't wait to get into the meat of this training!

Which body weight exercise do you enjoy training with most and which is your nemesis?

My favorite core exercises are situps and crunches. I really dislike, push-ups and planks. My ultimate love/hate relationship is with the burpee, which I became VERY familiar with at my Spartan Sprint Race.

What's your big goal for 2013?

Completing my second full marathon(in November) at a personal best time (shooting for under 4:30).

Where in the world would you most like to complete a Challenge?

I would love to do a challenge or any kind of activity with my friend @ltwolff in Hong Kong where she posts so many great pics from. Or my buddy @kaplaneran, on the trails that he runs. They both post some amazing views.

Which Tribesports user makes your day?

I have so many good friends, both on and off TS, It would be unfair to try and mention them all. All I can say is they are all truly Legendary! What a great group of peeps! They know who they are!

I do have to mention one though. She was absolutely the GREATEST virtual training partner anyone could hope for! We both trained together, for our first marathon. We just kept creating challenges to keep each other motivated, I couldn't have done it without her! @amyoutdoors, you are the best!

What's your favorite quote?

This is my favorite video ever! I even have it saved as an mp3, that plays randomly with the music that I run to!
