Tribesports User of the Week: Lorain R

Posted by Lorain R on 10 May 2012 at 5:31 AM

Lorain R you are User of the Week!

We absolutely love your Create 100 Challenges in 100 Days Challenge! It’s got everyone’s creative juices flowing, what has been your favourite Challenge that you created?

It’s very hard to say which is my favorite; I haven’t created a Challenge I didn’t like, and I would never create a Challenge I wouldn’t take myself. The process usually starts with noting ideas on paper, attempting to create the Challenge, and then when it’s done, it makes room for further creativity. Since I’m a night runner, I got the idea for the BAT (Before Astronomical Twilight) Crazy Challenge as I was attempting to complete, prematurely I found out later, the May Supermoon Challenge.

I love taking photos as I run, so that was the catalyst for the Photo Scavenger Hunt. I like the idea of the “Sweat Level” Challenges- probably wouldn’t have created them if I hadn’t been exposed to the “Threat Levels” after 9/11. The Two-A-Day came from having dated a boxer years ago who always talked about his Two-A-Days. No Vending Machine Products was the outcome of spending way too much on very small portions of  way too unhealthy junk from the vending machines at work. I have another list going for some more, and when those are created, I’ll have some new ideas.

What has been your toughest Challenge and which are you most proud of?

Run for a Streak of 7 Days. I usually run 4 to 5 days a week and give myself a day off here and there. Since I have to get up at 3:30 A.M. most days, it was really tough to complete, but I did it.

One of your top accomplishments was to run your first marathon aged 52; what was it that made you decide to run one?

I have been wanting to run a marathon since before Joan Benoit was the first woman to win the first woman’s marathon in the Olympics. I kept saying, with each passing decade, I want to run a marathon by the time I’m 30, 40, 50…well I finally said “Just Do It”. And I did it.

Make It a Tribesports Challenge and I’ll Think About It Tribe is an awesome idea – what inspired you to make it?

I am beginning to see Tribesports’ Challenges in everything. I sit in meetings at work and try to think of ways to make Challenges for all the tedious things I am required to do. I have a sense of humor that pervades everything I do, many people see it as almost inappropriate, but I just can’t help it! I would rather laugh than cry. That could be a Challenge: “The Next Time you feel like Crying, Laugh Instead”

If money and geography were no obstacle, what would be your dream Challenge?

I would want to do at least 10K distance runs in places like the Sahara Desert, Africa, the Arctic, Appalachian trail, the Badlands of South Dakota, the Grand Canyon, I need a map to point out all the places I’d like to run. Around the World in 100 10k’s or more.

I have always wanted to climb Mount Everest, too. These dreams are what inspired me to create the Souvenir Runners Tribe. I haven’t been to many places, but I try to run in every one I’ve been to. I got to run in Alaska, and I actually got lost in Maryland and ruined dinner plans because my brother-in-law had to come out looking for me. I was lost for about two hours.

Who inspires you most on Tribesports and who makes your day?

That’s easy- Neil C! He is awesome, truly! He seems to have a very dry sense of humor and he points out all my faux pas’. I loved his “Caution Runners” profile pic! He’s fun!!!!

What quote motivates you to continue taking on awesome Challenges?

“Have Fun!!!”

Lorain also just completed the Log 500 miles of Training Challenge - what a great week she's having!
