Tribesports User of the Week: Murray S

Posted by Murray S under Running, Adventure Racing on 6 September 2013 at 11:00 PM

Murray S Tough MudderWhat's been your toughest Tribesports Challenge and which are you most proud of?

The hardest Challenge I have done so far was doing 50 push-ups in one set. It was initially a struggle to do 10 in one set, but with lots of persistence, grunting, and a few bad words, I was finally able to do 50 . The Challenge that I’m most proud of, is running 5 k in under 20mins. When I first started running again in Sept of 2012, it took me an hour and 20 mins to run 5 k and I couldn’t run the whole 5 k. With the help of many Tribesports running challenges, lots of fartleks, and encouragement from Tribesports users, I finally broke the 20 min mark.

We love that you made your own Join the Tribe T-shirt - are you excited that you'll have the real thing soon?

I saw a Challenge to wear your tribesport shirt at a race, and I honestly never thought I would be selected as user of the week, so I made my own. I had a local decal company make the shirt to wear to the spring Tough Mudder in Toronto, ON, Canada. The shirt says, “Join the tribe” on the front and , “Runners United for Boston” on the back.

It was a great promotion for Tribe sports, as I’ve had many people ask about the shirt and what it means. I’m totally stoked about getting an official T-shirt and will definitely wear it with pride.

What's been your favourite mud run to participate in?

The spring Toronto Tough Mudder has been my favourite so far even though conditions were extreme; only reaching a high of 3 degrees C that day. I trained really hard during the winter running in some pretty extreme wet cold conditions which really paid off for this race doing the course in 2 hours 28 mins. The only down side was I was so cold at the end of the race I wasn’t able to drink my free beer!

Do you prefer climbing obstacles which are physically hard or ones which take more nerve like the fire jump?

I really like a balance of both, although I am a little bit of a thrill seeker and love the challenge doing something a little bit on the crazy side. The thought of jumping through fire, getting electrocuted, and jumping in ice water seem to give me a little extra drive.

Ice push-ups!

Although it was the physical obstacles that really forced me to train hard as I was determined to complete the whole course.

It's awesome that you keep active with your kids - which activity do you do most together?

Added resistance for push-upsI try to stay active with my whole family. My son and I share a special bond and love of the outdoors. My middle daughter and I love to fish together, and play baseball. My youngest daughter has started running with me. I’m trying to get all of them to run with me. We do a lot of hiking, viewing wildlife, and get outdoors as much as possible. We recently had an especially enjoyable paddle through the Hullet Marsh where we observed over 20 different species of birds.

I was also particularly proud of him recently when he volunteered with the Maitland Valley conservation Authority where he helped with their annual Owl prowl. My youngest daughter and I participated in the event and we were able to watch my son help with the event.

Where would you most like to complete a Challenge?

I want to travel to Costa Rica some day and would love to complete some challenges there as well as climb Cerro Chirripo Mountain in Costa Rica. Maybe I could set up a challenge like swing in the rainforest like a monkey!

Which Tribesports user makes your day?

There have been so many users that have helped give me advice, encouragement, shared experiences, and set up awesome challenges. I really hate to single any one out. They are all a great motivation and they all make my day!!

What's your favourite quote?

Favourite quote is by Oprah Winfrey:

Oprah Winfrey Quote: “Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it."

This is quote has really helped me at times push myself for an extra km, or dig a little deeper to get those few extra seconds. It’s really just sums up life in general, you get out what you put in!!
