Tribesports User of the Week: Nocturnal R
I am not particularly strong in my core and so when I decided to do planking, I find it tough. Especially when I have to do 2 minutes everyday for a month. I thought it would get easier after 2 weeks, but the last 2 weeks of the challenge were the toughest. Another reason for it being though is that I cannot have an off day. When I am busy and tired, I still have to do these before I go to bed.
For a while I shy away from the 'do [xxx] everyday for a month' type challenge. But for the last 3 months, I will pick 2 or 3 and do them everyday for the month. So my toughest challenge is happening this month and my next toughest challenge will be the ones that I pick next month.
Aside from running, which sport is your favourite?
Due to my lazy eye and poor hand-eye coordination, my sports option is limited. No ball games. My next favourite is swimming. It's low impact and therapeutic.
Where in the world would you most like to complete a Challenge?
Hmmm. There are so many. I would like to run marathons in different countries. I've only just started and will need to save up for the travels. However, there is one marathon that I would really like to do and that is the Athens marathon - where marathon originated.
What is TeamFatbird and what work do you do with them?
TeamFatbird is a running group in Singapore. I got to know them when I first started running. I later joined their training program to help me through my 1st marathon. I am now a helper with TeamFatbird to help other runners train for their marathon races.
Have you completed your marathon passport?
No. Only done in 3 countries so far.
Your running tights marathon photo is great - what's the story?
That was in the Paris marathon last year and my 1st in a cold country. My compression tights were designed for warm climate and is supposed to dissipate heat better and cools the body down. But the temperature that morning was below 10C and it was freezing cold (for me). Regardless, I was enjoying the run as did I feel that I was overheated even once. It also helped me achieved my personal best - about 20 minutes faster than my runs here in equatorial weather.
How did you become a marathon pace maker and what do you enjoy most about it?
I guess being consistently helping out with TeamFatbird and another weekly running program helps me get shortlisted for the pacer role. The discipline part of the pacing is the weekly training with my fellow pacers. We help each other maintain the right pace in our training. But the truly best part was on the race itself when we have a dozen or so followers with us all the way to the finish line. We talked to them and keep them motivated. And when they come back and thank us for helping them achieve their target.... makes me want to sign up as a pacer again. And I did for Sundown 2013.
When running as a pacer, I'm no longer running for myself. When I turn back and see the people following me, I realize that they are relying on me to help them achieve their goals. It was awesome.
Do most of my workouts without equipment, but there are 2 equipment that I must have. GPS watch when I run, and foam roller to relieve my tight muscles.
What is your big Challenge for the year?
This has got to be Run 2013km in 2013
