Tycho H Tribesports profile pictureWhich Challenge have you found to be the toughest and which are you most proud of?

It's gotta be the 2000 crunches in a single day Challenge. I broke it down in chunks mostly of 500 crunches. That wasn't too hard but my abs hurt a lot for a few days. It was a big challenge to keep going but my abs are an important muscle group for rowing and they need to get stronger. I like abs exercises and continue doing them as much as I can.

You've logged a massive amount of crunches on Tribesports - what would you say is your favourite ab workout Challenge?

Definitely the bicycles! Why? Because it works out the entire abdominal section as well as the obliques. And you can do them pretty quick as well so thats a big benefit.

Being selected to row for the Netherlands must have been a very proud moment in your life, how did you first start adaptive rowing?

Tycho H playing wheelchair hockey

It is a big honor to row for the National team! And it all happens so fast. After 13 years of playing wheelchairhockey I quit in 2010. After doing basically nothing for three months I was ready to start something else.

Sports has always been important to me. There are many adaptive sports that I'm not familiar with. Fortunately for me, when I decided I wanted to try a new sport, there was this Talent Scout day organized by the National Sports Federation. I could try all kinds of sports. One of the events I subscribed to was rowing and I had to do a 500m test on a indoor rower. Based on that result I was labeled "talent" and a month after that I had my first rowing practice at the local rowing club. You could say I'm just very lucky to be selected. Adaptive rowing is not a big sport in the Netherlands. We started the programme back in late 2010 with 8 rowers and now there are only three left including me. We're really trying to get more physically disabled people involved in adaptive rowing. It's such a great sport!

How does Tribesports help with your rowing training?

Well I found out about Tribesports only recently during the off-season. At first I didn't quite know what it was, but after a while I decided to really dive into it and learned it is a really big community with lots of people sharing similar interests. Some challenges that already existed really help me with my rowing training, whether it's a physical challenge or more or less a healhty lifestyle challenge. It fun to do challenges and get "encouraged" to do things you normally wouldn't do or do on a different scale.Tycho H rowing with his Netherland bladesI also created a few challenges for other members to try out for themselves. The challenges are based on my weekly training programme. On the 20th of October, the new rowing season will start after a two month delay. It will be a lot harder to incorporate the challenges I am already taking in the training programme and try to visit TribeSports daily, but I will try to keep posting as much as I can.

What Challenge would you recommend all Tribesports users should take?

I recommend one of the rowing challenges I created myself. Rowing is a sport which involves your entire body to work together in order to go fast. It's great for endurance and also for getting stronger. It really is a total body work out and it won't get you injured very easy, so everybody can do this, no matter what size or age you are.

Other than Rio 2016, what big goal are you working towards?

The first major target I'm aiming for are the World Championships Rowing 2014 which will be held in the Netherlands! And maybe I'm allowed to go to the World Championships Indoor Rowing

February next year in Boston (the so called C.R.A.S.H.B.) if we can raise enough money. My teammate and I really wanted to go last season, even booked a hotel but we went on training camp so we had to cancel the trip. Basically 4 years will be broken down in two periods of two years, first working towards the World Championships 2014 and after that working towards the Paralympics.

Tycho H TattoWhat's the story behind your tattoo?

It's a phoenix firebird and got it when my grandmother passed away at the age of 96 a little over 2.5 years ago. To me she was a very special woman and I cared very much about her. The tattoo is a reminder of her. She actually hated tattoos but I really wanted to get one for a long time and I really love the mythology behind the Phoenix firebird.

Which Tribesports user makes your day?

Wow that's tricky one.. There are a lot of members encourange the things I do and I see a lot of the same members comment on my posts. Anyone who's encouraging me, helping me in a way or comment on the things I post make my day. I have a fairly big group of followers which is great. I'm also following everybody back who is following me as well, trying to learn from them and hopefully they can learn from me too somehow. I even got a couple of new "likers" for my Facebook athlete page through Tribesports which is great!

What's your favourite quote?

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
First saw it written on a T-shirt a guy was wearing and immediately loved it!
