Push ups are my least favorite physical activity so I steer clear of most of the challenges involving the dreadful push up. I really enjoy participating in team challenges, i.e. Boys vs Girls, Older vs Younger and Team Relays. With that being said, I really enjoyed the 5 Person Relay that Eddie W put together. By the time the challenge was complete my running frequency and mileage had more than doubled! There was a great camaraderie amongst all the participants in the challenge where we encouraged not only our own teammates but others as well and smack talk was in abundance; it was the best! Because of that challenge I have made some great friends around the world.
The variety of sports you do is awesome, which sport would you say is your favourite?
Tennis has been a huge component in my life. I have been playing competitively for over 25 years in leagues and tournaments working my way up in levels and ratings. I guess you could say I'm a seasoned veteran on the court. I have a close knit group of tennis friends that I travel with to watch the pros play. We have gone to all four major slam events: US Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open as well as several other tournaments. The beautiful thing is, there are still many more to see. I think Monte Carlo is calling my name.
What's been your proudest moment on the tennis court?
Fortunately I've had a lot of proud moments on the tennis court over the years. Since I have to pick one it would have to have been several years ago when I played tournaments all the time. One particular tournament I competed in two different levels which meant I would be playing at least two matches a day. One of those days in the tournament I ended up playing four matches. I was exhausted but had made it to the finals in both levels which meant I had two finals matches to play the following day. Both of my partners and I won our respective matches and I have matching clocks as a reminder of that great moment!
Running a half marathon with your daughter must have been a lot of fun! Who crossed the finish-line first? Was there a cheeky sprint finish?
My daughter had been asking me to run a half marathon with her for a couple years. The funny thing is I wasn't even running then. Finally when I began to run on pavement and not on a treadmill I was hooked. A half marathon race was chosen, something easy for the newbie and we were set, or so I thought. As the race date approached my daughter said she wouldn't be able to run with me because she had not been training much since the birth of her baby a few months prior. However, she traveled along to support me in my first half marathon then decided once we get there she was going to run it too. She didn't even bring anything to run in so we went shopping and had to find someone to watch the baby as well. Now it's the day of the race. We started out together for about the first mile then she told me to run my race so I went ahead and kept looking back.
I finished first, elated and in tears that I actually ran 13.1 miles! I then went back to find my daughter so I could run the last part with her. It was a very emotional day.
Where do you think is the best place to go on a long cycle in Las Vegas?
There are a couple places to cycle that get you off the city streets. One is the River Mountain Trail which is a 34 mile loop that takes you along a portion of Lake Mead. There is everything from difficult climbs to some good downhill plus the added bonus of seeing a body of water. Another popular place to ride is Red Rock Canyon loop and the area surrounding it. On weekends it's a cyclist's go-to destination. I've begun training for my first century ride which is in November so these two loops will be seeing a lot of me over the next few months.
With your first marathon completed, what's your next big running Challenge going to be?
I managed to qualify for the Boston Marathon when I ran my first ever marathon. What a thrill it was to actually run a marathon and then to qualify for Boston as well was an incredible accomplishment for me. Now I am anxiously waiting for registration to open and pray I get in. That would be epic especially in light of what happened this year during the race. Also, there is a Beach Cities Challenge in Southern California that I plan on running. There are a total of three marathons in the challenge; Surf City in February, Orange County in May and Long Beach in October. If you run all three you get an additional medal and who doesn't like medals right?
Which Tribesports user makes your day?
This is a trick question! There are so many people here on Tribesports that make my day everyday and encourage me to push further and be an all round better, stronger person. The list is long of all the individuals who inspire here. They are from all around the world and I hope to be friends with them for years to come. Thank you my friends, you know who you are!
What's your favourite quote?
I have a few favorite quotes:
"It's choice, not chance that determines your destiny."
"Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, I'll try again tomorrow."
"The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach."
