Try a sport you've never done before every month in a year

It's easy to slip into the same routine - hockey training on a Tuesday, match at the weekend. Gym on Thursday if you can face it. Maybe - just maybe, a jog round the common on Monday night.

But there are so many sports out there! Why not take this challenge and try a sport you've never done before. Maybe you have considered it before, maybe you've just discovered it. Either way, get yourself out there and try a sport you've never done before - you never know - you might become hooked!

Take the challenge, research the sport you're going to try, and join a Tribe to help you get involved!

And then take the challenge to the next level - and do it again the next month, and then again the next month - in fact, every month for a year!

Lavinia I Try a sport you've never done before every month in a year Challenge

Contributorgold Lavinia I + August that year - Hatha Yoga (I remember the club was organizing a clothes swap in September)
+ September - archery; even went twice that month; ice skating (not a tremendous success, I must say);
+ October - burlesque classes
+ November & December - the Curves workout and winter cycling (that is a fairly different sport from summer :) ) Joking, I tried weights in late December and then again a few times; I should be good to start weight training again by March this year.

Thank you, Maria! I hope you get to have more time for yourself, now I can see how addictive this can be. It was amazing! I much prefer the high wall - with the instructor belaying, I had no problem trusting him. Bouldering was a little tough on my arms and shoulders...

Somewhere halfway through I realized that I used to think I was somewhat afraid of heights... then I looked down and cringed :D, but decided to go up a little more. Didn't get to the top, of course - lots of extra weight still.

Wow that's great I haven't experienced the having-someone-belay-me while I climb yet (I use an auto belayer) but it's good that you trusted them, even with the auto belayer I was afraid to jump down the first time and I was just 5 ft above the ground! It was embarrassing but funny! I am afraid of heights so I just try to not look down. I honestly don't think weight was your problem but instead maybe not enough upper body strength or flexibility. One of my friends wasn't able to reach the top because she doesn't have much strength above, and she is a thin marathon runner. I've also seen young kids of all sizes who haven't lost their flexibility climb like monkeys, while we struggled to climb! So yeah I would say work on those two things too, I've also been trying to improve them! Good luck Lavinia :)

Contributorgold Lavinia I On a very slow computer (browsers so old that updates reject them :)), but I should keep track of this :)), it's changing so often! :) Kickboxing class got cancelled, now they called to tell me that kayaking class had the same fate. Good thing I had registered for an introduction to climbing.

Contributorgold Lavinia I January - Traditional Dance (Spanish)
February - Swimming
March - West-African Dance (three sessions, I enjoyed it, but now clashing with belly dance classes)
April - Football (soccer) (well, that's when I agreed to join a team, the season started in May)
May - Fencing, ballet (of which I had some notion from the traditional dance instructor)
June - Running? :)
July - Kickboxing
August - any ideas? :)

Took the boys out, they loved it! 3 local caches found, and they're champing at the bit to go again. Need to start planning next month's sport.

Contributorgold Nick B I know that by month 10 onwards I will be struggling to find a sport I have not done before as part of the Try a sport you’ve never done before every month of the year. But this may be pushing it a bit.

Steve, you'll never believe it - took my sons to a a Sportsfest event a couple of hours after my last post, and there was a climbing wall. The chap persuaded me to try it so he could get some pics for his sponsors - & I did it! Successfully scaled one route, found my fingers got very weak very quickly, but it will definitely be something to try again soon. Thanks for the tip.

Emma M Try a sport you've never done before every month in a year Challenge

Emma M I attended my first ever Trampoline class on Sat - It was only £4 and a right laugh :-) Used to go on friends who had one in her back garden, but this was way more bouncy and I've never had a lesson before...... First lesson - I piked, tucked, straddled, seat droped, swivel hips (this took me a while to get right, couldn't keep my legs straight) and at the end of the class tried a front drop with a mat. My aim this Sat is a full front drop without scrapping my elbows and a backdrop (maybe)..... Great fun and saw some amazing moves from the experts and the gymnastic on the air track next to me were unreal!

Giving it a go this week hopefully - I'll be happy if farting is my only problem when there - I can't even touch my toes, not sure why I am trying yoga!
