Contributorsilver Lua E Hey guys, I just wanted to say that a year ago I was a smoker and asthmatic. I decided to start taking my cardio seriously. I would run a 3.5k loop, but more than two thirds of it was walking (usually huffing and puffing for air, and with painful side stitches). I kept at it, gradually upping my distances, but letting myself take breaks when I needed to and ALWAYS listening to my body.

This past weekend, my perseverance paid off and I ran a half-marathon. It was grueling, and it took over 2 and a half hours, but I did it - WITHOUT INHALERS OR CRAMPS! I even let myself stop to take a picture of a deer mid-race, because I believe in enjoying your time outdoors :)

Keep going guys, you are taking such a HUGE step just by making the decision to get moving and you should all celebrate this!! You all rock!!

This is a great story to hear! I have been in a similar situation with what I now consider my former asthmatic self. I have attended two 5K races and have had to walk most of the distance to keep my breath but I'm doing it and I'm getting better! Also proud to say I'm over a year and a half without an inhaler and with taking care, listening, and pacing myself, am healing my always aching knees in the process as well. On my practice runs I often stop to enjoy the scenery and wildlife along the trails. I should start bringing my camera along. It's always such a peaceful experience! Thank you for sharing your wonderful story and your encouragement! I would like to work up to half-marathons and more in the future. I know I can get there if I keep believing I can and it's great to hear stories of others who have lived it already! Thanks for rocking with us!!!!!! :)

Contributorsilver Tamer B My first race ever, 5K.
I was very disappointed with the result today.
The good thing is I did it.
I walked half the distance, I wasn't able to run for a continuous 4 mins. I was out of breath since the beginning.
I need to work on my endurance, speed, breath control.
I hope I will continue and don't get desperate because of this result.

Thanks for the support Jeff. I wish I will achieve some goals

There is it is ! Tamer, never give up ! I don't know how you train but the only thing you need is consistency and determination...that will bring you everywhere you want to go. All your goals are reachable but you have to push yourself a bit farther everyday... Plus you have to be confident. Yes you can !! :-)

I supposed to run, but I decided to walk and enjoy the spring scenery.
I think I should include more walking specially as I am training for longer distance.
What is your opinion about combining walking with running.

20130312224619-joemc7

Hi Tamer! If you are a bigger and novice to running, then a mix of running and walking during a training session is good. The key to running is in your breathing, and that is difficult to manage when you are starting out as a runner. So if you are say doing a 30 minute training session. I would break that down into run for 1 minute, walk for 2, run for 1 walk for 2, for the 30 minutes, once or twice a week. Then the following week, change to 2 run 1 walk, for 30 minutes, then try 3 run, 2 walk, etc. until you feel confident you can do the full 30!!

Tamer B and Lydia D encouraged this.

Thanks Joe, I passed this period already, I can now run 10 mins. easily without walking. I even run continuously for 37 mins once. I am still struggling with breathing> What I meant is instead of 30 mins run a week is it better to change one of them to just 30 mins walking only?

Joe M encouraged this.

Yes, especially as a beginner you have to let the body get used to exercise, so that when you increase the tempo from walk to run it will not rebel too much! :)

I did 6 min run :1 min walk * 5 times.
I was aiming to run a whole 5k.
I still hate the first 10 mins.
I love the feeling after finishing
I enjoy the accomplishment.
It is still tough for me.
I need to work on my speed.

Thanks Gray and Murray. I will try the lampspot-sprint Idea> I was thinking on alternating sprint and jogging beside walking. increasing 10% of the distance each week is a great idea, this way we tend to run faster to finish the required distance. I will update here.

To your times fartleks once a week will do wonders as well.
