Damian B W.A.V.A Age Grading Tribe

Contributorgold Damian B Just messing around with some numbers. I was wondering if a mixed group of ages and sexes ran a parkrun (5km) and by strange chance they all got a WAVA age grading of 70% what would be the finishing order. This is what came up:

M25 (18:26)
M30 (18:29)
M20 (18:37)
M35 (18:50)
M18 (19:03)
M40 (19:30)
M16 (19:34)
M45/M14 (20:16)
M50 (21:04)
F20/F25/F30 (21:09)
M12 (21:14)
F40 (21:51)
M55 (21:57)
M10 (22:33)
M60 (22:54)
M65/F50 (23:57)

Very interesting to see.

Contributorgold Alan S So my current 3km PB gives me a WAVA score of 66.0%. Which is fantastic! It is a little scary, though. Using the runningforfitness.org site, that WAVA score equates to an average 5km effort of 20:22. My current PB is 21:57! I have long felt that I have a huge 5km PB in me, but that's just madness. I do understand that the WAVA results don't mean you CAN do that time - no way I could do a 10km in 42:23. But a 5km isn't that far away from a 3km. I guess that just means I'm going to have to go out hard on my next parkrun and believe I can sustain it.

Indeed. Or just a few more Tollcross parkruns! ;) Last week's doesn't seem to have done me any harm.

Contributorgold Alan S I've noticed that using the two calculators above give different WAVA gradings. For example, the former gives me 64.87 for today's 3km, but the latter 65.0. Does anyone know which is the more accurate?

Donald W and Ris S encouraged this.

I noticed the same when I was trying to work out if my recent 10k had got me past 60%. The Good Running Guide has me at 56.49% and the Running for Fitness has me at 57%. No idea which is more accurate, though at the Parkrun website directs us to the Running for Fitness, I'm more inclined to believe that one (which is the higher one too ;-)).

Works for me, Ris, works for me. :)

Contributorgold Ris S I put what I though was 5km over 26 mins into the calculator and it told me it would be 91.1%. Knew something wasn't right!!! I'd put in 5 miles by mistake!!!!!
Anyway: for me to achieve my next target of 57.5% over 5km I need to run it in 26:17 and my PB now stands at 26:34. Hopefully target this on the Christmas Day Parkrun!!

Contributorgold Ris S I'm going to be voting for Jo Pavey to be tomorrow night's BBC Sport Personality of the Year.

What she has done for running is truly inspirational, her achievements are impressive for ANY woman who has a baby let alone a woman who is over 40!!!! (and yes, she's made WAVA percentages harder for all of us ladies, but what a way to do it Jo!!))

She's parkrunner A418670 and to quote Gavin Megaw:
“In 2014, less than 10 months after giving birth to her daughter, this lady smashed the world record over 5,000m for a female over 40 years of age and then won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, finishing behind a pair of young Kenyans in a world-class race. Ten days later she headed to the European Championships and won her first major title, conquering a talented field a little more than a month before turning 41. In doing so, she became the oldest female (by three years) to win a gold medal in the history of the championships.”

Gives hope to us over fifities!! Truly inspirational.

Contributorgold Damian B Another interesting thing.... I saw on a report of one of the park runs that they had a lady with WAVA rating of 101%. I can only assume they are saying she ran faster than there official recorded best for that age?

20170527135612-smouse

Looks like she was in her 70s from what I could find out

20140702045016-rissaroo

Fair play to her I say!!!!

Contributorgold Damian B I presume then if someone my age beats the current records then it would mean my WAVA rating would go down, I wonder how often that happens. I suppose those the same age as Usain Bolt would have been hit quite badly when he destroyed the 100m world record for example.

20140702045016-rissaroo

And Mo Farah has probably done substantial damage to all 31 year old men over 5km and 10km!!

20170527135612-smouse

Yes and Jo Pavey can't be helping the 40+ ladies

Contributorgold Damian B Got my highest WAVA rating for a Park Run (5km) today but I think this will be more interesting when I reach my next birthday otherwise I'm just chasing times.

Contributorgold Kevin G Great idea for a Tribe Ris, and the associated challenges. I think I need to pick a single distance to focus on improving, and I am sure other distances would improve too.

Contributorgold Danyka P Hello, I'm 44 from Canada and for a 5km : Age graded: 52.7% Predicted VO2 Max: 31.0 ml/kg/min. Does is mean that 52.7% of women same age run faster then me?

Using the Running for Fitness Calculator:

Your 5k = Age graded: 66.8%    Predicted VO2 Max: 40.2 ml/kg/min

Your 10k = Age graded: 67.0%    Predicted VO2 Max: 41.0 ml/kg/min

1/2 M = Age graded: 65.4%    Predicted VO2 Max: 40.8 ml/kg/min

Contributorgold Damian B That's interesting. The link you've found for the calculator gives lower results than http://www.runningforfitness.org/calc/racepaces/rp - its this other one that seems to match closer to the parkrun stats.

There's a few out there, most of them look rather complicated with multiple boxes. I just liked the visuality of the dial on this one.

Contributorgold Damian B My PB for the 5km gives a WAVA rating of 67.25% so it makes it seem like a third of runners are better than me but actually its just based on the fastest runner of that distance for the given age. Does make you wonder if there are other ways of measuring how good you are against the general population rather than the best of the best.

20150222223319-irfade

Yes I agree! at least we don't have to go into deep detail but it is so annoying that one bad performance puts bad impact in overall performances if not calculating individually. Actually to improve more seriously I usually take my average time of at least 3 races of same distance for age grading. Hope your training is going great and enjoying it.

Contributorgold Nuchi N Hi Ris, the link to the age grade calculator can't be opened.

Thanks Ris. I am not really a runner but this age grading is an eye opener to me. I tried with my km from using elliptical machine and I am only at 38% for the age graded %. Interesting. Do you know of any calculator that can be applied to elliptical or cross trainer?
