Winter cyclists

Do you love riding your bike? I do. I had been reading about people 'winterizing' their bikes and thought about it. Here in eastern Canada, there is a lot of salt on the roads in the winter, and it is very hard on a bike. Studded tires are almost a necessity also, for safety's sake. Once you get started, though, it's quite a rewarding challenge, especially when you go in -30 degrees Celsius. For me, what pushed me into winter bike commuting was the fact that it costs $17 a day or ~$150 a month to park at the city parking lot if I took my vehicle. The biking has kept me moving, and it's that, or spend time brushing off/shoveling out a vehicle, or stand in the cold waiting for the bus, right?

Contributorgold Lavinia I Finally a full-on "winter cyclist" here. :)
I was at the bike shop (well, at MEC, technically, as I had to outfit myself for the winter thing, too) and one staff lady asked me if it's my first winter on the bike. I answered "yes" and she smiled: "I've been doing it for 20 years"... Gave me courage. :)

Contributorgold Bob K Hi All, I'm joining this tribe, before next years snow hits I plan on getting a Surly Moonlander to ride through the wintermonths here in Eastern Washington state.

Martin M Winter cyclists Tribe

Contributorsilver Martin M I live in south west england so studded tyres are not really needed, but I do change to 28mm back tyre if we get prolonged snow, and change back to toe clip pedals so I can wear decent walking boots if going away from main roads. Mostly, winter is just a matter of doubling up on layers particularly hands and feet :)

Thanks for joining, Martin! I also took off my toe cages so I could wear winter boots. Winter is just about over with, here. It's been up to 8C here, and rainy, so the snow has taken a real beating. There's usually one last storm about St Patrick's Day, and then we can enjoy nicer weather. My poor old bike can't wait. I can hear it grinding, it needs grease so badly. She'll be getting a total tear down, frame painted, and new crank, cogs, cassette, chain, shifters, and front brake set, over the summer. Almost might as well buy a new bike, but I've had her 22 years and am somewhat sentimentally attached to her.

Ted B Winter cyclists Tribe

Contributorsilver Ted B This is my ride at 5:30am in Eastern Canada. It's been a crazy winter. Minus 35C, some really nice, relatively warm days, and then almost spring-like weather, and now back to slushy snow again, but it has to end soon!
